James Swaby joined PSP-IT in June on an apprenticeship, find out how he is getting on.

What is your current role and what does it involve?
My current role is a Junior Software Developer, it involves working with the rest of the team developing software. I am involved in writing specifications for upcoming projects and testing software providing plenty of opportunity for learning from the senior developers. As part of my apprenticeship I am also studying for my NVQ Level 3 in IT User Skills, by studying alongside working this is giving me chance to apply the theory from the course.

Why do you enjoy working in IT?
IT was the subject I excelled in throughout school and enjoyed working with PC’s so I'm delighted to get the opportunity to work within IT.

Describe your experience of working at PSP-IT? What do you enjoy about working there?
I am enjoying working at PSP-IT as there is a high expectation of quality and perfection which fits with my own standards of work. There is a great team who work well together in a very nice new professional office environment.

What is your career background?
At Spalding Grammar School I took my GCSE's and A-levels in Economics, Business Studies and ICT. On leaving school I started work at a Leisure Centre/Sports Bar where I became a Venue Supervisor, I also studied for an NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration & Management and gained both a personal licence and food hygiene certificate. Away from work, I am also in the Territorial Army training to be a Driver Communications Specialist for 160 Regiment based in Grantham.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced since starting with the company?
Coming from a background with little programming knowledge has meant it has been challenging since starting at PSP-IT. There has been a lot of new skills to learn quickly and NVQ work to complete whilst working on full scale projects but the support of the team has made it possible and enjoyable.

A few comments from Mark Griffiths, Development Manager, James' boss!
From day one James has fitted into the team and his new surroundings. He has been tasked with multiple projects in his short time here from creating procedures, to starting to write code. James has really excelled on our CRM product helping with all aspects of the project from design right the way through to reporting.
